West Ireland | County Mayo

Achill Island is located off the west coast in County Mayo and is the largest island in Ireland (24km x 19km). It is linked to the mainland by Michael Davitt Bridge, between the villages of Achill Sound (Irish: Gob an Choire) and Polranny (Irish: Poll Raithnígh). Jagged coastline, cliffs, mountains, lakes and amazing beaches, it all create unique, fabulous landscape of Achill Island. There are five Blue Flag beaches (Dooega, Keel, Keem, Silver Strand and Gold Strand), which are a great base for many water based activities as surfing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, sea kayaking, diving, fishing ... For hiking enthusiasts Achill Island offers one of Ireland's most dramatic coastal walks - the cliffs of Croaghaun (the highest sea cliffs in Ireland and the third highest sea cliffs in Europe-688 m) or stunning views from Slievemore. Those who like historical sites may be interested in Megalithic Tombs located on slopes of Slievemore or The Kildavnet Castle - 15th century Irish tower house, which was a home for legendary "Pirate Queen" - Grace O'Malley.
