Midlands Ireland | County Cavan

County Cavan Museum is situated in restored 19th century Poor Clare Convent, in Ballyjamesduff, 19 km southeast of Cavan Town. The museum was open to the public in 1996 and since then collects, conserves, and displays the material heritage and culture of County Cavan. The exhibition galleries feature a wide range of artefacts dating from the Stone Age up until the 20th century. Among the most interesting exhibits are pre-Christian three-faced Corleck Head, a 1000-year-old dugout boat, or a collection of medieval Sheela-na-Gigs. The museum has a fine collection of 18th, 19th, and 20th-century clothing ranging from delicate wedding apparel to Military dress uniforms. There are also exhibitions dedicated to folklife, Gaelic Athletic Association in Cavan, and Great Famine. A very important feature of the museum, attracting many visitors, is the outdoor replica of World War I trenches opened in August 2014. It is over 350m long and includes frontline, communication and support trenches.
