Midlands Ireland | County Roscommon

Drumanone Portal Tomb is located nearby Sligo-Dublin railway line, about 3 km west of Boyle in County Roscommon, on the east end of Lower Lough Gara. This very well preserved Neolithic monument was excavated in 1954 and during the research, several cremations were found as well as a porcellanite axe-head which archaeologists believe came from axe quarry at the foot of the Tievebulliagh in Co. Antrim. Drumanone Portal Tomb consists of a polygonal chamber covered by one enormous capstone based on two tall portal stones and two single stones, one on each side. The capstone has slipped a little bit downwards. The present outline of the cairn seems due to land cultivation.
