West Ireland | County Galway

Glengowla Mines are situated 4 km west of Oughterard, in Connemara region of County Galway. Lead and silver were mined here between 1850 and 1865. The mine is also noted for it's rare and beautiful octahedral crystals of fluorite and quartz, some of which you can admire on the display in the Natural History Museum in London. The present landowners, Patrick and Keith Geoghegan opened Glengowla Mines as a heritage site and tourist attraction. Guided tours take you to the journey through marble chambers and caverns of the mines and bring closer its history and show the working conditions of the miners. There is also a visitor centre and a blacksmith's shop. Glengowla Mines are situated on a working farm where you can meet some farm animals including Connemara Ponies and you can watch the demonstration of herding dogs. A big attraction is gold panning, popular not only amongst the children but also between the adults.
