Kilfane Church is located about 5 km north east from Thomastown in County Kilkenny. The ruins which survived to this day, dates from the 14th or 15th century but also some features from older structure are still visible. A 13th century sedilia near the altar is believed to have come from an earlier church. Defensive tower adjoining the church had residential accommodation for parish priests in the upper storeys and sacristy on ground floor. The main attraction of this site is undoubtedly the 2.4 m tall limestone tomb slab, with sculpted effigy of a Norman knight in detailed chainmail armour and Cantwell coats of arms on his shield. His legs are crossed, believed to show that he was a participant in the crusades. Is believed that the statue represents Thomas de Cantwell, lord of the Kilfane who died in 1319. Sculpture is known as "Cantwell Fada" and probably dates from the 14th century. It was unearthed in the church grounds in relatively recent times, around 100 years ago.
