Kilmore Cathedral is located about 5km southwest of Cavan Town, just off-road R198. The present building dates from 19th century and is dedicated to St Feidhlimidh, who as tradition says, founded the first church on the site in the 6th century. It was raised to the rank of cathedral in the 1450s. The most interesting and famous feature of the cathedral is the 12th-century Romanesque doorway, which was inserted into a chancel north wall and adopted as a vestry door, in 1860. It is believed that the doorway comes from the ruined Premonastratensian abbey on Trinity Island on the Lough Oughter, about 4km away. The door has four orders of arches, and capitals of the engaged columns of three of the orders are carved with dragon heads. The capitals of the columns of the fourth order are carved with bearded heads. The Kilmore Cathedral is also known for having the original copy of the first version of the Old Testament in the Gaelic language. Translation was commissioned by William Bedell who was Bishop of Kilmore from 1629 to 1642. His grave is located on the cathedral's grounds.
