Mitchelstown Cave is situated on the border of County Tipperary and Cork, just off M8 motorway (exit 11 or 12). It was discovered accidentally in 1833, by Michael Condon during limestone quarrying. The cave quickly became a tourist attraction, luring many curious people, explorers and scientists. To preserve the natural state of this wonder of nature, the landowners, the Mulcahy family decided to organize guided tours. For over 100 years, the tours were led using just candlelight. In the 1960s, the owners decided to make the access to the cave easier for visitors. By 1972 electricity had been connected and footpaths were built. The cave impresses with the diversity of the shapes of its dripstone formations and contains one of Europe’s finest calcite columns, “Tower of Babel” which is about 9 m high. Mitchelstown Cave is also known for its musical events, which take place in the largest cavern, called the Concert Hall. Not far from here, there are two very famous tourist attractions: Cahir Castle (about 16 km) and Rock of Cashel (about 30 km).
