Proleek Wedge Tomb

East Ireland | County Louth

Proleek Wedge Tomb is located about 4km northeast of Dundalk (Co Louth), on a golf course in the grounds of Ballymascanlon Hotel. This megalithic monument was built in Bronze Age period and is locally known as Giant's Grave. Local folklore connects it with nearby Proleek Dolmen and according to this legend the Giant's Grave is a burial place of Scottish giant Para Buidhe Mór Mhac Seoidin who came to challenge Irish legendary hero, giant Fionn mac Cumhaill to combat but he died insidiously poisoned by opponent. This well preserved wedge tomb has a 6m long gallery. It has 8 stones on each side and narrows from 1.5m at the west, to about 1m at the east. There is a one remaining roof stone on the eastern end and large septal stone closing the gallery at west.
