Southeast Ireland | County Wexford

Saltee Islands, are a pair of small islands (Big Saltee and Small Saltee) located about 5 miles from the mainland, near the village of Kilmore Quey in County Wexford. It is one of the most important bird sanctuary in Ireland. You will find there many different species of birds such as Gannets, Puffins, Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Guillemots and Great back Gulls. The best time to visit is during the breeding season, in late spring and early summer. At the end of July, most birds are gone. An unforgettable experience is to watch thousands of gannets flying overhead, gulls which protect nests, determined to fight off unwanted visitors, and Puffins curiously watching the visitors from short distance. You can get there by boat with Mr. Declan Bates from Kilmore Quey Harbour (booking required, phone no: 0872529736). The island has no harbour, so you have to change boat at inflatable boat to get to ashore. Suitable footwear is recommended, because boarding the inflatable boat from slippery rocks on the return journey is quite difficult.
