The Boheh Stone

The Boheh Stone, also known as St Patrick’s Chair is one of the finest examples of neolithic rock art in Ireland, located behind abandoned house approx 300 m of road N59, 8km south from Westport in County Mayo (is signposted as "Site 2" of Clew bay Archaeological Trail). The monument itself is a large rock about 2m tall with over 250 individual petroglyphs carved on it. The carvings are mainly cup marks, enclosed by one or two circles with a small number of keyhole motifs and is suggested that this petroglyphs were carved between 3000 and 2000 BC. The meaning of this rock art and the purpose of the site still remains a mystery, but during recent research, a very interesting phenomenon was discovered. Twice a year, on April 18th and August 24th, during the sunset, when Croagh Patrick is viewed from this place, it give the wonderful impression of the sun rolling down the north side of the mountain. The phenomenon was called "The Rolling Sun of Boheh" and is believed that the dates of its occurrence are associated with the beginning and end of the growing season.
