Dublinia

East Ireland | County Dublin

Dublinia is an excellent place to learn and discover history of medieval Dublin. This living history museum is housed in neo-Gothic building of former Synod Hall attached to the oldest cathedral in Dublin - Christ Church Cathedral. There are three exhibitions, each on one floor. Ground floor is dedicated to the founders of Dublin City, the Vikings. Exposition provides information about their origins, their customs and their way of life. The reconstruction of settlement including house and life thriving street gives great image of how capital city of Ireland looked in the Viking era. On the first floor, there is an exhibition about the Dublin in medieval times, which covers history from arrival of Strongbow in 1170 up to the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII in the 1540. Using a combination of audio-visual, reconstructions and graphics, the exhibit brings the past to life in an accessible and entertaining way. The second floor hosts an exhibition called "History Hunters", which explains how archaeology works with history and other sciences to piece together the jigsaws of our ancestors lives. The excellent example of this is reconstructed face of medieval woman generated from a skeleton found at the edge of River Liffey. Using modern reconstructive techniques, scientists have allowed us to see how our medieval ancestor's face looked like. Another attraction of Dublinia is newly renovated St Michael’s Tower which gives spectacular views of the city but only for those who climbed 96 steps to get to the top.
