Knockbrack

Knockbrack, also known as Labbadermot is a megalithic monument situated on the seashore on the western side of Sallerna Bay, about 1.5 km west from fishing village of Cleggan, County Galway. The classification of this megalith leaves some doubt but the interpretation as a wedge tomb is the most likely. It's also hard to define the date of its construction but assuming that is the wedge tomb, it was built between the late Neolithic and early Bronze Ages (about 2500 to 2000BC). The monument is orientated E-W and consists of small narrow chamber (2.3 m long and up to 1 m wide) covered by large roofstone (3.75 m long, 1.6 m wide and 0.3 m to 0.7 m thick) resting on three small stones (orthostats) on each side and one on the eastern end. There is also large stone laying on ground beneath the western end of roof slab which might be considered as the second roofstone but this is only speculation. The monument is situated in beautiful area with stunning views of Sallerna Bay and Inishbofin in the distance.
