Altamont Gardens
Southeast Ireland | County Carlow
Altamont Gardens are situated on the banks of River Slaney 10 km south from Tullow in County Carlow. This Robinsonian-style garden is located on the grounds of 18th century Altamont House, but most of the garden was created at the beginning of the 20th century by Lecky Watson, and then by his daughter, Corona North. After her death in 1990s house and garden were given into State hands and since then have been well cared for by the OPW. The whole estate covers an area of 16 hectares and is a blend of the formal and informal layout. The garden features an arboretum (some of the trees dates back to 1750s), Ice Age Glen and bog garden. The lake is surrounded by rare azaleas and rhododendrons as well as a huge variety of herbaceous plants and shrubs. In the springtime, a countless number of snowdrops, bluebells and daffodils cover the woodlands floor creating beautiful, natural carpet. From the Altamont Garden, there are spectacular views of the Blackstairs Mountains, Wicklow Mountains. In the walled garden, there is a cafe and a stunning garden centre.
