Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens

East Ireland | County Kildare

Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens are located in Tully, County Kildare. The stud, which is a Thoroughbred horse breeding facility, is open for visitors and together with The Irish Racehorse Experience takes you to a journey through the world of horses and riding. Colonel William Hall-Walker established this stud in 1900, and in the 1940s it was given to the state and became the Irish National Stud and a birthplace of many Champions. Japanese Gardens were also established by Colonel William Hall-Walker, at the beginning of the 20th century. The garden was created by Tassa Eida, designer from Japan. Under his leadership, 40 people worked for 4 years, to develop this beautiful garden. The landscape is strongly associated with symbolism and meaning, based on the journey through life from birth to death. The garden has become a very important place of interest, which attracts a huge number of visitors each year. Beside the Japanese Garden is the St.Fiachra's Garden. It was opened in 1999 and commemorates the patron saint of Gardeners, St. Fiachra. This large, wild place has a simple design of paths led through the plantations of native oak, ash and willow, with the lake in the centre. On the edge of the lake, there are three replicas of beehive huts.
