County Leitrim

County Leitrim is a small county situated in the northwest Ireland. It's landscape is divided by Lough Allen, situated just in the center. The north part is dominated by mountainous scenery, and the south is a plain with many rivers, lakes and valleys. The biggest town of Leitrim is Carrick-on-Shannon, renowned for its fine lock and waterway systems built in 19th century, which are now a real treat for the enthusiasts of inland sailing and fishing (best salmon fishing in Ireland). Carrick-on-Shannon is also famous for possesion of smallest church in Ireland, the Costello Memorial Chapel, built in 1877 by local merchant, Edward Costello, as a memorial and burial place for his wife, Josephine. Another worth visiting attraction in County Leitrim is Parke's Castle, restored early 17th century stronghold situated on the shores of Lough Gill. In small village of Dromahair there are ruins of last Franciscan friary to be founded in Ireland before the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry the VIII, Creevelea Friary. Exploring County Leitrim, we can't forget about Glencar Waterfall, which was inspiration for great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats.
