County Offaly
County Offaly is located in the centre of the Irish Midlands. Its name derives from the ancient Kingdom of Uí Failghe, which was previously known as King\\\'s County. Tullamore is the main and largest town. Most of the county is plain and bogland, with occasional elevations. The only hilly terrain are the Slieve Bloom Mountains situated on the southeast with the highest peak of 527 m, Arderin. The northwest part is the flood plain of the Shannon River. County Offaly has a lot to offer to the visitors. There are many noteworthy castles as Birr Castle, Charleville Castle, Leap Castle or Clonony. County Offaly is also a home for one of the most iconic monastic sites in Ireland, Clonmacnoise. Very famous Irish whiskey comes from the Tullamore Distillery, which is open for visitors. The Grand Canal runs through County Offaly and connects Dublin with the River Shannon. For the outdoor activists, there are golf courses, horse riding and many walking trails.
